Brown Football Falls 21-14 to 1st Place Penn

The Brown Bears football team fell 21-14 to first place Penn on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. Brown has lost five of their last six games. 

The Bears fall to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the Ivy League, while Penn moves to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League.

With the Bears trailing 21-14 in the fourth quarter, Brown quarterback Thomas Linta threw an interception at the Penn 34 yard line with 1:28 to play in the game to seal a 21-14 Penn victory. 

Brown trailed 21-0 at the half, but got back in the game with 7:36 left in the third quarter after Linta ran one yard into the end zone to cut Penn’s lead to 21-7 after an extra point. 

The Bears pulled within seven points with seven seconds left with running back Johnny Pena took a hand off two yards into the end zone to make the score 21-14. That score capped off a three play, 60 yard drive that took 39 seconds. 

Penn Grabs Control Early 

Penn got on the board after receiver Justin Watson caught a 67 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alek Torgersen to put Penn up 7-0 after an extra point by Jimmy Gammill sailed through the uprights. 

In the second quarter, Torgersen hit receiver Christian Pearson for a 17 yard touchdown pass, which capped off a 15 play, 87 yard drive, giving Penn a 14-0 lead after the extra point by Gammill was good. 

Penn added another score just before the half when running back Tre Solomon ran one yard into the end zone with 22 seconds left to put the Quakers up 21-0 after a Gammill extra point was good. That score capped off a 16 play, 82 yard drive that lasted over seven minutes. 

The Stats 

Linta completed 22 of 34 passes for 216 yards with an interception, while receiver Garrett Swanky hauled in five passes for 100 yards to lead Brown. 

Penn’s Watson caught 11 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown to lead all receivers. 

Next up 

Brown returns to action on Saturday, November 5 when they host Yale at Brown Stadium. The game will be Brown's second to last home game of the season. 

Kick off is set for 12:30 p.m.
