Gloria Patterson Court to be Dedicated at Hope High School on Friday
The official dedication of the court in Gloria Patterson’s honor will take place this Friday at 6 PM at Hope High School.
Patterson, a beloved educator and coach, passed away in January 2022 at age 73.

“Any Hope ‘Blue Wave’ alumni know who Ms. Patterson was,” said Ed German told GoLocal in December. “You’ll be glad to know that the Hope High School Gym has been redone and named in her honor.”
About Patterson
Born on April 7, 1948, in Port Gibson, Mississippi, Patterson graduated from Addison High School in 1966, where she excelled in track, basketball and was known as the “fast runner." Patterson graduated from Jackson State College in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education.
She then began her teaching journey at Nathanael Greene Middle School in 1970, where she taught physical education for 6 years. She transferred to Hope High School in 1977 to teach health and physical education. She coached the girls’ basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. Her basketball team won the Rhode Island state basketball championship in 2007.
She was inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) and the Rhode Island High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Gloria’s coaching achievements culminated with her selection as the 2006 female High School Coach of the Year.
