URI Basketball Signs Head Coach Dan Hurley to Contract Extension

Dan Hurley
URI basketball Head Coach Dan Hurley has received a contract extension through the 2021-22 season, adding one year to his existing deal that he signed in April of 2015. The deal guarantees him a salary of $1 million per year starting in the 2017-18 season.

"I am excited and proud to continue to lead the men's basketball program at the University of Rhode Island and my family is proud to call Rhode Island our home. We have worked tirelessly to build a championship-caliber program on the court thanks to the leadership throughout the University - starting with President Dooley, Thorr Bjorn, and the URI Foundation. The anticipation level for the upcoming season is high due in large part to the quality of the student athletes we have recruited here. It is an exciting time four us as a program," said Dan Hurley in statement.

This new extension comes a couple of months after Hurley was rumored to be the top choice for the Rutgers coaching job before he pulled his name out of the running in mid March. According to reports, Rutgers offered Hurley a 6 year deal worth $12 million.

Prior to the 2015 extension, Hurley made $630,000 during the 2014-15 season and was one of the four lowest paid coaches in the A-10. He is now one of 8 coaches in the 14 team conference that make at least $1 million.

This is the third extension that Hurley has signed with URI in his four seasons.

Overall, Hurley's record at URI stands at 62-24 with one post season winning coming in the NIT during the 2014-15 season.

Last season, the Rams went 17-15 overall and 9-9 in the A-10 after losing star guard E.C. Matthews in the first game of the season and sitting A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Hassan Martin for the final four games of the season with knee tendonitis.

In 2016-17, URI will one of the favorites to win the A-10 Conference and get back to the NCAA Tournament.

The Rams will return E.C. Matthews, Hassan Martin, Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and Kuran Iverson while transfer Stanford Robinson will be eligible to play.
