PC-Butler Preview

The PC Friars will be visiting Butler’s home court, Hinkle Fieldhouse, on Saturday to battle Butler for the second time this year.  PC had one of its most complete games in the first matchup against Butler, winning handily 84-65 at the AMP on January 8th.  In that game PC was outstanding at both ends of the court.  PC’s team stats were: 49% field goal shooting, 42% 3-pt shooting, a 43-26 rebound edge, and only 8 turnovers!

PC had four players in double scoring figures in the January 8th contest against Butler:  Bensley Joseph and Jaydon Pierre with 18 each, Wesley Cardet with 17, and Ryan Mela with 10.  This was Mela’s best all-around game of the year, as he added 15 rebounds and 4 assists.

Butler is led by a trio of forwards: Jimmy Telfort averaging 15.7 pts/game, Pierre Brooks at 14.8 pts/game, and Patrick McCaffrey at 12.2 pts/game.  Guard Finley Bizjack and forward McCaffrey are 3-pt threats as both shoot 42% from behind the arc.  Butler has a promising big man in 7’1” Andre Screen.  He is still developing and only plays about 20 minutes/game but is averaging 6 boards/game.  The Friars pretty much contained him in their first outing, limiting the screen to 6 points.

Despite just a 3-9 Big East record, Butler has been playing good basketball since they played PC in January.  They have lost to UConn by only 2 pts, to Creighton by 4 points, and to Georgetown by 3 points.  Earlier this week, they crushed Seton Hall by 30 points, 84-54.

PC’s injury woes may affect their play against Butler with Hopkins and now Jabri Abdur-Rahim out for the season, and Wesley Cardet, who scored 17 pts against Butler on January 8th, likely out for this game.

Here’s the tale of the tape for this game.

The extent to which Butler has gotten better since PC blasted them in January is reflected in Butler’s offensive stats.  PC has a 7-4 record at Butler, but with Butler improved and PC’s injury woes, this game is up for grabs.

Hinkle Fieldhouse

Built-in 1928, Butler’s on-campus Hinkle Fieldhouse, which seats 9,100 fans, was the largest on-campus basketball arena until 1950.  Its barrel-shaped roof is a distinctive feature, along with its totally brick façade.  It is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
