Kansas was led by Perry Ellis with 17 points and five rebounds while Frank Mason III followed up with 12 points and five assists to lead Kansas to a tournament opening win.

Five Takeaways From URI's 76-60 Loss to #11/12 Kansas
Jared Terrell
Freshman Jared Terrell had five points, one rebound and one block and no turnovers in his first game on a national stage this season. He went two for 11 from the floor and missed the one free throw that he took.
Terrell played 32 minutes in the game which was second most on the team behind E.C. Matthews.

Biggie Minnis
Biggie Minnis started the game and played 12 minutes for URI. Minnis had one point, three turnovers, no assists and one rebound for the Rams.
Minnis did not attempt any shots in the game and only shot two free throws, making one.
Not a good afternoon for Biggie Minnis on a national stage. With that said, the bench players that came in for him like T.J. Buchanan, did not do a whole lot better. The Rams bench only had 14 points in the game.
Turnovers
A very big positive for the Rams in this game is that they only turned the ball over 11 times in the game. URI had six turnovers in the first half and five turnovers in the second half to give them their lowest amount of turnovers in a game this season.
This is a good sign for Rhode Island going forward. The fewer turnovers, the better chance of winning.
Kansas also only turned the ball over 11 times in the game.
E.C. Matthews
A good sign for URI is that E.C. Matthews continues to play well and in this game, he did what he was supposed to do. Matthews put up 20 points, five rebounds and two assists in the game.
This is his second consecutive game with at least 20 points.
The only negative part about Matthews game against Kansas was the four turnovers that he had which led the team.
Ending on a positive note
Though the Rams lost the game, they finished on a positive note. After trailing at the half 43-25, URI came out in the second and played much better. They outscored Kansas 35-33 for the half and got themselves back in the game late in the second half, cutting their deficit to 12 with seven minutes to play.
The Rams were much more aggressive going to the basket and that is something they can build off for games in the future.
