A new study on “States Where People Spend the Most & Least on Clothes” has found that Rhode Island falls in the latter category - and almost at the bottom of the U.S.

Rhode Island ranks 46th in the country for buying new wardrobe items, according to WalletHub’s breakdown released this week.

Don’t worry, there are reportedly New England states that are even less fashion-consumption-conscious - Massachusetts is #48 and Connecticut is #49.

Buying in Focus

The study is based on "cost of clothes as a percentage of median monthly household income" as a determining factor.

Tops on the list? Kentucky, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

“In some states, it can cost more than 2% of the median monthly household income just to purchase a men’s dress shirt, a pair of boys’ jeans and a pair of women’s slacks. In the highest-spending states, this is due to a combination of both high prices and low incomes,” said Chip Lupo, Wallethub Analyst.

“Filling out one’s wardrobe has become increasingly expensive in recent years, so before buying something new, people should reevaluate whether the purchase really fits in their budget, whether it’s necessary, and whether there are more affordable options with less brand-name recognition," he added.
