Construction Begins on Brown's New Applied Math Building

Construction began on a new, 13,000-square-foot applied mathematics building at Brown University on Monday. The building is three stories and will provide office space for faculty, students and staff along with new conference and meeting space.

“We are excited about getting a new custom-designed, more functional building that will provide more open spaces and meeting rooms to facilitate collaborations," said Bjorn Sandstede, the chair of the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University.

This is a new building but the University is taking great care to make sure it matches it's residential surroundings.

“At its core, this is a University building, so it won’t look like a house. But there will be a shift in the geometry on the third floor to create a strong cornice line and attic story that is common to the historic houses in the neighborhood,” said Michael McCormick, assistant vice president for facilities management.

The new building will be located at the corner of Hope and George streets in an area currently used as a parking lot for the Barus and Holley building.

The building is scheduled to be completed in December of 2015.
