Foxwoods Continues to Promote 'Big Papi's House' While Ortiz Is in Hospital

Foxwoods Resort continues to promote “Big Papi’s House” weeks after the former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was shot, nearly died and has undergone three operations.

Presently, one element of the campaign, a billboard that overlooks Route 95 south in the Providence market, continues to publicly promote Ortiz for Foxwoods. Billboards are bought by the month, but the vinyl covers can be switched out within days.

This past week, Ortiz underwent his third surgery. Ortiz was shot in the back a month ago in a club in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic while drinking with friends.

The ‘fun’ campaign features Ortiz, gambling and flirting with a group of women who are poolside at the casino.

Ortiz underwent emergency surgery at a hospital after being shot, then was flown to Boston for two additional surgeries and was in the ICU for a number of days.

“'The injuries he had were lethal, even separately, if they wouldn’t have been taken care of right away, especially the one on the liver,’ Dr. Jose Smester said. ‘But in that moment, you don’t think about death, you think about what you have to do,’” according to AOL.

On May 13, Foxwoods said in the original announcement unveiling the partnership, “the multi-channel campaign will see the three-time World Champion greeting consumers at Foxwoods and beyond as he features prominently on the brand’s billboards, commercials, property signage, social platforms, mobile app and microsite offering a behind-the-scenes look at Papi’s preferred activities from gaming to restaurants, nightlife, extreme adventures and more.”

Foxwoods' marketing office did not respond to requests for comments.

More than 10 individuals have been arrested tied to the shooting of Ortiz.
