Jankowski named tax assessor for City of Providence
Thaddeus Jankowski has been named tax assessor for the City of Providence.

He will oversee the City’s property tax assessment functions, including the production of the annual certified tax roll that is the basis for the City’s tax levy, the maintenance of records of all real estate, tangible and motor vehicle tax records and policies and procedures used to determine valuations.

“I’m excited to welcome Ted as the head of Providence’s Assessor's Office. A proven track record and more than 40 years of experience in high-level assessment roles made him the top choice,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza.

About Jankowski

Jankowski‘s career in public administration spans over four decades.

Most recently, Jankowski was the principal of Jankowski Associates, an assessment and management consulting practice based in Portsmouth, NH founded in 2013 that offers services nationally and internationally in assessment administration, tax administration and public finance. 

Prior to that, Jankowski oversaw the valuation of parcels valued at over $31 billion as the Director of the Department of Real Estate Assessments for the City of Alexandria, VA. During his tenure, the department received the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) Certificate of Excellence in Assessment Administration (CEAA) Award.

In 2008, he was appointed as the first County Assessor for Nassau County, NY. He also served as Commissioner of Assessing for the City of Boston where he oversaw the first revaluation at that time in 38 years and Chief Assessor/Assistant to the Mayor for Fiscal Affairs for the City of Newtown, MA where he oversaw the first valuation of real and personal property in over 30 years.

Jankowski earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Philosophy from Boston College.

His professional certifications include: Commonwealth of Virginia Certified Assessor, State of New York Certified County Assessor, Massachusetts Accredited Assessor and he has been a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) for 20 years.

Jankowski has won multiple awards including the World Bank’s 1999 Award of Excellence for his work on the Thailand Land Titling Project, recognized as an international model for land titling and land valuation projects.

He also received the National Center of Public Productivity Award from Rutgers University in 1992 for his work on a payment in lieu tax program for tax-exempt institutions for the City of Boston.
