McKee Says Not the Time to Increase Health Insurance Rates, Tigue Refuses to Respond to Questions

On Wednesday, Health Insurance Commissioner Patrick M. Tigue announced the approval of near double-digit increases for health insurance costs in Rhode Island for 2023.

Matt Sheaff, a spokesman for Governor Dan McKee, criticized Tigue's decision: "While OHIC has accepted increases that are less than what the insurance companies had requested – the Governor believes it is not the right time to raise health insurance rates.”

“And while his legal team has determined that the Governor does not have the authority to block these increases at this time, he has begun working with Commissioner Tigue and his policy team on potential policy solutions that could prevent further increases next year," added Sheaff.

The Governor’s office also said it is pleased that the General Assembly passed his proposal for a Health Spending Accountability and Transparency Program, which is intended to significantly strengthen accountability for healthcare cost growth by health insurers and large healthcare providers.

Some of the increases are as high as nearly 10%. Learn more here.
