NEW: RI Loses 600 Jobs in May

Rhode Island lost 600 jobs in the month of May, while unemployment dropped to 3.6 percent, according to the Department of Labor and Training.

“Preliminary estimates indicate that in May the Rhode Island unemployment rate was 3.6 percent – the lowest since April 1989. We need to continue investing in the talents of Rhode Islanders because that is how we build a resilient economy,” said Department of Labor and Training Director Scott Jensen.

Nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island fell to 498,700 in May, a decrease of 600 jobs from the April revised payroll estimate of 499,300.

According to the Department of Labor, May marks the first monthly job loss in Rhode Island since January.

The number of jobs is up 2,100 from May of 2018. 

The number of employed Rhode Island residents was 532,100, down 400 from April.

Since May of 2018, the number of employed Rhode Island residents was down 1,000. 

The Rhode Island labor force totaled 552,200 in May 2019, down 700 from April 2019, and down 3,300 from May 2018 (555,500). 

Unemployment Drops

The number of unemployed Rhode Island residents was 20,100, down 300 from April.

Since May of 2018, the number of unemployed decreased by 2,300.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in May 2019, unchanged from the previous month and down two-tenths of a percentage point over the year.
