The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA) has appointed a new president, appointing Dr. Joyce Gifford to lead the 250 member nonprofit organization focused on promoting animal welfare, veterinary medicine, and public health. Gifford succeeds Dr. Shelly Pancoast, who completed her term at the end of 2023.
She is leading the organization amidst ongoing, unprecedented demand for veterinary services, coupled with a shortage of veterinary professionals and the need for expanded access to veterinary care.
She is the founder of Abbott Valley Veterinary Center in Cumberland, where she is the Medical Director. In 2006, Gifford was honored with the Rhode Island Small Business Person of the Year award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Gifford’s deep commitment to RIVMA and its work includes multiple terms on its Board of Directors, first beginning in 1999 and again in 2021.
Gifford is a graduate of Cook College, Rutgers University and attended the Master’s Program at UNH for Animal and Nutritional Sciences. She graduated from Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine and trained in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, MA.
She lives in Cumberland with her husband and beloved rescue dog. When not working, she enjoys playing Pickleball.
