RI PowerPlayer: Dr. Jeffery Williams

Every week, GoLocalProv shines the spotlight on one individual who is making an impact on Rhode Island.  This week, GoLocalProv sat down with Dr. Jeffery Williams, Chairman of the Providence Board of Licenses and Senior Pastor and Chief Empowerment Officer of The King’s Cathedral.

Congratulations on your new position as chairman of the Board of Licenses. You have served on the board since 2011.  What are your top priorities this year?

Going forward, I intend to work even closer with business owners, the local Colleges and University's, Law Enforcement, the City Council and the Zoning Board to collectively address outstanding issues and concerns as they relate to public safety.
Additionally, I will be looking for ways to be more efficient, fair and transparent in matters that come before Board; increase public safety by requiring the proper management of businesses holding a city licenses and the suspension or revocation of those that are nefarious or other wise “bad actors.”

You have extensive involvement in the community. Can you tell us a little about your contributions to the state and how that has brought you to where you are now?

My work as the Sr. Pastor/Chief Empowerment Officer of The King’s Cathedral and my involvement with other organizations both locally and abroad has profoundly sensitized me to the needs, pains, inequities and the opportunities within the Capital City and beyond.  In addition to the Board of Licenses, I presently serve on, the Board of the RI Free Clinic, The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, the State Board of Education-Council for Post-Secondary Education, the Minister's Alliance of RI, and Providence Police Advisory Board. It is these commitments and several others that collectively assist me in my duties as Chair of the Providence Board of Licenses. My personal view is that caring for the citizens of our City/State includes civic engagement.

Over the past year, there were some controversies about the Board of Licenses because of its strict regulations, with some saying the strict approach is unreasonable and others that it has made a dramatic improvement in nightlife violence incidents. Do you have a plan for regulation moving forward?

Everyone brings a particular style, perspective, and ethos to the board which I believe is healthy, and is certainly true of the Chairperson. The work accomplished by the last two Chairpersons of the Board has been exemplary and have significantly contributed to making Providence nightlife safer, while supporting small businesses and economic growth.

Recently, the bribery scandal between Shark Bar & Grill and former Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox has been in the news. The city is asking for their licenses to be voided. Can you tell us anything about the board’s position on the matter?

Tragically there was a deliberate egregious breech of the public trust. Given the fact this matter is currently before the Board of Licenses, it would be improper to comment. We will be hearing the City’s petition to void/annull the license of the “Shark” restaurant.

With all of your community involvement, you must be very busy. Can you take us through a day in your life?

I thrive to be productive rather than busy. Professionally, every day is often unpredictable. My Church daily responsibilities, which are local and global, involves advising, visitations, counseling and crisis management; one or more community or Board meetings or preparing for them; and interfacing with elected or appointed officials regarding community issues.
