Sims Metal Makes Fourth Major Investment in Green Initiatives in RI

Sims Metal, a global leader in metal recycling, announced it has purchased two electric forklifts to continue progressing its sustainability goals, as well as further contributing to the State of Rhode Island’s ambitious 2021 Act on Climate. This brings Sims Metal’s total investment to date in electrification to nearly half a million dollars operating across the Providence site.

The Sims recycling facility is located on Allens Avenue.

According to Mike Kiwanis, General Manager of the facility, the two CAT electric pneumatic tire lift trucks, valued at more than $150,000 each, are designed to replace gas-powered machinery, providing a cleaner working environment with zero CO2 emissions. The electric forklifts have the same lifting capability as the gas-powered option, demonstrating that sustainable practices can be just as productive as equipment using more traditional energy sources.

“This significant investment in new, greener technology represents our fourth major investment in the span of two years, demonstrating how we are delivering on our company purpose, creating a world without waste to preserve our planet, and ensuring our operations have as little impact on the environment as possible,” said Kiwanis.

“We understand the importance the State of Rhode Island has placed on meeting its net-zero carbon emission goals by 2050 and we’re proud to contribute to their efforts to combat climate change and create a more sustainable future,” said Kiwanis.

The announcement comes on the heels of the company’s recent $300,000 investment in an electric car flattener which is used to flatten end-of-life vehicles prior to transport and recycling. By upgrading from diesel-gas-powered machines to electric machines, Sims Metal is taking a significant step toward further reducing its CO2 emissions at the facility.

The State’s 2021 Act on Climate sets enforceable climate emissions reduction mandates, positioning the state to boldly address climate change and prepare for a global economy that is shifting to clean energy. The emissions mandates call for 45% below 1990 levels by 2030, 80% below those same standards by 2040, and fully net-zero emissions by 2050.

"As we continue to build a more climate-resilient city, I'm pleased to see Sims Metal is further integrating sustainable practices and green technology at its Providence facility," said Mayor Brett P. Smiley. "Their continued commitment to sustainability and emission reduction supports our efforts to enhance the quality of life for our neighbors and build a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come."
