A group of physicians and community members has been raising questions about the quality and leadership of South County Hospital.

As GoLocal reported on September 4, a group of nearly 40 people, including current and former doctors at South County Hospital along with community members, have called for "decisive action from leadership" to address what they say are "urgent" concerns including staffing shortages and service reductions.

Now, a group of patients are joining the fight.

“Various patients of South County Hospital have united in a powerful call to action, holding a press conference to demand an immediate change in hospital management. Alarmed by the jeopardy to their ongoing care, they are urging the Governor and Attorney General to intervene decisively to restore stability and accountability to hospital operations. They are part of Save South County Hosptial 2024,” said the group about Thursday’s press conference at 1:00 PM at Narragansett Public Library.

The group says, “Several patients, battling serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease, will boldly share their struggles and fears about the continuity of their care. They will expose how current hospital management has severely damaged doctor-patient relationships, fostering a toxic work environment that has driven away doctors and staff.”

“In a decisive move, they will demand the immediate replacement of Board of Trustees Chairman Joseph Matthews, Chief Executive Officer Aaron Robinson, and Chief Medical Officer Keven Charpentier to safeguard the future of patient care and hospital operations,” according to the announcement.

Hospital officials have issued statements in response to the criticism but have repeatedly refused to answer questions from GoLocal about the group's criticism.
