Torgan Named RI State Director for The Nature Conservancy

John Torgan
The Nature Conservancy named John Torgan the new State Director of its Rhode Island chapter. Torgan replaces Terry Sullivan, who was recently named the Conservancy’s New England Division Director.

“I am excited and ready to take the helm at this critical time for nature and for our state. Our beautiful lands and waters, along with the people of Rhode Island, are what distinguish us and make this such a great state.  If we take good care of these places, we can continue to achieve amazing outcomes in spite of the many challenges we face,” said Torgan.

Torgan previously served as the chapter’s Director of Ocean and Coastal Conservation for the past five years. In that role, he led the growth and success of The Nature Conservancy's coastal habitat restoration programs in South County and expanded the chapter's work on water quality, sustainable fisheries, and regional ocean planning and management along the southern New England coast.

Prior to that, he worked for Save The Bay for 18 years, where he helped build the  Narragansett Baykeeper Program. As Baykeeper, he was involved in nearly every issue affecting Rhode Island’s waters including oil spills, wastewater treatment, dredging, power plants, nutrient pollution, coastal development, urban waterfronts, and invasive species.

Torgan grew up on the water and worked summers through high school and college on charter fishing boats out of Point Judith and on Block Island. He earned his B.S. in Environmental Studies/Biology from Union College in New York, and worked for a fisheries consulting group in New York and Michigan after graduating.

He was one of the earliest and longest-serving Waterkeepers in the Waterkeeper Alliance, which now includes more than 200 Waterkeepers from around the world. John has served on a number of national committees including the National Academy of Sciences’ Marine Board on oil spill response, marine transportation, and tank vessel lightening. He served on the EPA’s effluent limit task force, and on the National Invasive Species Advisory Committee, and co-chaired a regional risk assessment team with the Coast Guard, northeast states, and the shipping industry.

Torgan is co-author of Narragansett Bay, with Richard Benjamin, published by Commonwealth Editions Books in 2008. He won the USEPA Award for Environmental Merit in 2012, for contributions to protecting and cleaning up Narragansett Bay.
