The United Way of Rhode Island has awarded $155,000 in grants from Housing for All Fund to four organizations that were selected because of those groups' ability to put program ideas into action.

The recipients of the grants include Adoption Rhode Island, Housing Network of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Center for Justice, and West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation.

The grants come after United Way met with over 300 Rhode Islanders at its Housing For All Summit in the spring.

“The overwhelming concern to come out of our housing summit was the fact that too many Rhode Islanders are spending too much to keep a roof over their heads. When working families and individuals have to make tough choices among the basic needs they can afford—such as a choice between buying groceries or paying for utilities—it affects not only their health and future well-being, but also the strength of our communities,” said Anthony Maione, President and CEO, United Way of Rhode Island.

The Summit

During the summit, residents from across the state and from a range of industries took part in a design workshop to help identify root causes and emerging needs surrounding the issue of housing affordability.

Those participating then generated strategies to address those barriers and create solutions. Overall, participants identified 568 strategies.

Grant Recipients

Adoption Rhode Island is receiving $25,000 in support of its Taskforce for Homeless Youth Program. The program will address homelessness and housing instability for youth and young adults, ages 13-25, by bringing together nonprofit service providers to plan and implement comprehensive efforts aimed at ending youth homelessness in Rhode Island.

The Housing Network of Rhode Island will use $50,000 in order to address Rhode Island's under-resourced affordable housing system by building a cross sector collaborative. Their goal is to increase Rhode Island's stock of affordable housing while reducing the number of Rhode Islanders who can't reasonably afford a place to live.

The Rhode Island Center for Justice will receive $20,000 in funding to support staffing for the organization's Tenant Advocacy Project. The project offers representation of clients with housing issues where there is an opportunity to improve the housing conditions of Rhode Island's stock of affordable housing while reducing, over the next decade, the number of Rhode Islanders who can't reasonably afford a place to live.

West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation was awarded $60,000 to launch its pilot Rhodes to Success project. Rhodes to Success is being developed as a housing strategy which will support young parents, low-income families, and first generation students in acquiring the postsecondary degrees or education certification  that leads to successful career and self-sufficiency.
