It’s officially the middle of Memorial Day weekend — and it also happens to be National Hamburger Day.

According to Chat GPT:

"The exact origins of the hamburger are uncertain, as the concept of ground meat served in a patty has been present in various cultures throughout history. However, the modern hamburger as we know it today is often attributed to Louis Lassen, a Danish immigrant who owned Louis' Lunch, a small lunch wagon in New Haven, Connecticut, United States.

Louis Lassen is said to have created the hamburger sandwich in the early 1900s. The story goes that he placed a beef patty between two slices of bread to serve a customer who wanted a quick meal they could eat on the go. This simple yet delicious creation gained popularity and laid the foundation for the hamburger's widespread fame."

So where to get your burger in Rhode Island?

If you're in the Newport area, check out what these restaurants had concocted for the latest "Burger Bender" contest -- and who won (note: these exact offerings may no longer be available, but you can ask!)

In Providence, burgers abound -- GoLocal is a big fan of the "Red Stripe burger" (at you guessed it, Red Stripe in Wayland Square), among many.

Whether you go to Harry's Bar and Burger or Haven Brothers or simply your backyard -- or if you prefer a vegan variety -- enjoy.
