Rhode Island has ranked No. 26. for Senior Health in 2014, according to the second edition of United Health Foundation’s America’s Health Rankings® Senior Report.

Notable gains for Senior Health

Nationwide, seniors are showing encouraging gains in key health measures and taking more steps to improve their own health. Notable gains for senior health include declines in physical inactivity, improvements in quality of nursing home care, reductions in avoidable hospitalizations, and increased preparation for end-of-life care.

“United Health Foundation’s America’s Health Rankings Senior Report is a valuable tool for measuring and understanding the key challenges and opportunities facing Rhode Island’s senior population,” said Donald Stangler, M.D., medical director, UnitedHealthcare of New England. “With the senior population expected to double in size in the next 25 years, it is important that we develop effective programs and solutions that address seniors’ health needs in Rhode Island and nationwide.”

Rhode Island’s Overall Health

The America’s Health Rankings Senior Report finds that Rhode Island has its share of strengths and challenges.

Rhode Island’s Strengths

Rhode Island ranked #1 in three measures.

For the second consecutive year, a high percentage of seniors in Rhode Island (97.5 percent) have a dedicated health care provider.

Rhode Island also ranked #1 in percentage of health screenings (92.4 percent) and #1 in lowest number of suicides at 6.4 per 100,000 adults).

  • In the past year, the percentage of seniors in Rhode Island who report that their health is very good to excellent increased by 23 percent to 45.5 percent, ranking it #7 among all states. The percentage of adults aged 65 and older who report their health is very good or excellent varies from a high of 49.3 percent in Colorado to a low of 29.0 percent in Mississippi.Nationally, 39.9 percent of seniors report their health is very good or excellent.
  • Rhode Island moved into the Top 10 to #8 for the percentage of seniors using hospice care (53.3 percent), increasing 50 percent over last year.
  • Rhode Island also ranked in the Top 10 for the following measures – obesity (#10 at 24.5 percent); prescription drug coverage (#9 at 88.2 percent); dental visits (#8 for each at 72.3 percent); teeth  extractions (#6 at 12.5 percent); and hip fractures (#3 at 6.2 per 1,000 Medicare beneficiaries).

Rhode Island’s Challenges

  • Rhode Island ranked #49 in two measures with among the highest percentage of hospital readmissions (16.9 percent) and low percentage of social support (74.8 percent)
  • Rhode Island ranked #36 in physical inactivity (31.5 percent) but 51.5 percent of seniors with less than a high school education are physically inactive compared with 15.4 percent of seniors with a college education.
  • In the past year, chronic drinking among seniors improved slightly to 4.8 percent, ranking it #41.
  • While Rhode Island ranked high (#13) in geriatrician shortfall (49.2 percent), the percent of need geriatricians inched up from 46.2 percent. The percentage of geriatrician shortfall varies from a low of 13.1 percent in Hawaii to a high of 90.4 percent in Idaho. Nationally, the estimated geriatrician shortfall is 58.9 percent.
  • Rhode Island ranked in the bottom 10 for the following measures – recommended hospital care (#45 at 97.6 percent); volunteerism (#44 at 19.2 percent); community support (#44 at $448 per adult 65+ in poverty); low-care nursing home residents (#44 at 18 percent) and mental health days (#41 at 2.6 days per previous 30 days).

UnitedHealthcare Programs Address Health Needs of Rhode Island’s Seniors  

Through its portfolio of Medicare plans, UnitedHealthcare supports Medicare beneficiaries in Rhode Island with clinical solutions that can help address the health challenges underscored in the America’s Health Rankings Senior Report and may improve seniors’ overall health and well-being. These programs include: 

  • Integrated disease management and care coordination programs, which provide select Medicare Advantage plan members with chronic health conditions – such as diabetes or certain types of heart disease – needed resources and support; 
  • UnitedHealthcare’s HouseCalls program, offering qualified Medicare Advantage plan members an at-home visit with a health care practitioner to assess health needs and discuss personal health concerns;
  • UnitedHealthcare’s PharmAssist service, which provides select Medicare Advantage plan members with one-on-one counseling sessions with specialty-trained plan pharmacists to understand how to take their medications as prescribed.
