Sarah Reeves, Director of Public Policy, Programs and Planning at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, told GoLocal that residents play a large role in helping to keep their neighborhoods clean and green during the fall season.

"Being green while the world is turning dark and gray can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be," Reeves said. "Compost your pumpkins! Scrape out all of the pumpkin seeds before composting. Alternately, fill the pumpkin with bird seeds and set out in the yard or on the deck or patio. Small, local wildlife will love it."

Reeves said those looking to go green should also turn their leaves into mulch and use it as a no-cost fertilizer to keep their lawn looking green and fresh, and re-use holiday magazines and catalogs by using the paper to pack away fragile decorations or presents.
