Fit for Life: WTF Are You Doing?

I arrived in Alabama with one of my coaches (Coach Mike) for training on a new program we are implementing at Providence Fit Body Boot Camp sometime in the 4th quarter of this year.

I was up at 4 am to catch a flight, and after traveling all day, we arrived, unpacked our stuff, and met for a workout at FBBC in Daphne, Alabama. After that workout, we found a field and ran a few sprints before returning to the hotel to get changed for dinner.

By the time we finished eating, I was spent. I literally could’ve fallen asleep in the restaurant I was so exhausted. So after eating a nice ribeye with rice, green beans & a cup of gumbo, we headed back for the night.

We decided that we would meet at 6 am and get a workout in before the conference.

When my alarm went off, I jumped up and asked myself WTF are you doing? (I said the abbreviation in its entirety)

Why are you getting up so early when the conference doesn’t start until 9? You have a full day of learning to do, and you are tired from the day before.

Then I thought to myself if I wasn’t doing this, what would I be doing? I’d be sleeping a little longer, then stressing out later in the day to get a workout in. On top of that, I thought, if I slept in, and missed my workout, I would be asking myself later on in the day, WTF is your problem, and what excuse did you have for missing your workout earlier?

The answer is …..I had no excuse. I got plenty of sleep, ate well & needed to stick to my routine, even while I am traveling. This is where the mindset came in that a minute of discomfort (getting up) is far less painful than a day of regret, which would have happened if I missed my workout.

So my question to you is, WTF are you doing?

Are you sticking to your routine all the time?

Are you missing workouts?

What is it that you do that is more important or beneficial to yourself than getting that workout in?

I know that it’s tough to get out of bed first thing in the morning and drive to a gym to sweat, however, nothing is easy, and when we choose the path of comfort, it usually leaves us in a worse position than chasing the difficult route.

This doesn’t just apply to fitness, it applies to everything we do in life.

If you want to make more money, you need to choose the path of discomfort as opposed to the path of least resistance. Yes, you need to make that extra sales call, yes, you need to work on the weekends, and yes you need to put in the time and effort. It’s the only way.

So I’m asking you that question again what the f@$K are you doing?

Are you making it to the gym three times a week?

Are you getting eight hours of sleep?

Are you drinking your water?

Even if you are hitting the gym, are you being efficient and getting results, or are you just going through the motions and walking around aimlessly?

I used to see it all the time in big box gyms. People are training improperly or with no intensity, and doing things that could cause injury. I had an inside joke with another bodybuilder that when we walked by someone doing ridiculous things, we would lip-synch WTF are you doing?

I even made up a t-shirt with the slogan because it blew my mind what some people were doing to themselves.

Hence the reason I opened Providence Fit Body Boot Camp is so we could coach more people to better health in a safe and efficient way.

If you are not getting enough sleep, I ask again, WTF are you doing that's more important & vital than getting your rest? Netflix? Binge-watching a TV show?

Whatever it is, it’s causing a domino effect that starts first thing in the am. Your night dictates your morning and your morning dictates your day. So if you wake up, hit the snooze button, miss your workout, and don’t meal prep, you can blame your nighttime routine.

I suggest reverse engineering your day. Decide what time you NEED to wake up to be productive the next day, then go to bed 7-8 hours earlier. Be rigid, and make no exceptions. Sleep should be a non-negotiable habit you install in your daily routine.

Why isn’t your nutrition on point?

WTF are you doing that you can’t eat healthy and sensible?

I hear it all the time, “I'm trying to eat better,” but there is no try. You are either eating well, or you are not. And if you are not, what is stopping you? You need to eat anyway, so why not choose to eat healthy?

I make it simple for my clients to make a decision.

You look at what you are about to eat, and ask…will this put me closer to my goal, or push me farther away?

Most of us know the answer, so this is where discipline comes in. Yes, it’s hard to NOT eat something that tastes yummy, but this is where chasing hard over comfort kicks in.

Applying the mindset that a minute of discipline hurts less than days of regret is essential for success.

I tell you all this because I want you to know that resisting the temptation to sleep in, stay up late, and eat healthy is difficult for me too. I love sugar, sleep, and TV just as much as anyone else. I am human too:) We are all the same. However, the main thing that separates us is our habits.

Ya see, whether you travel or not, your body still needs the same care and nutrients it does when you’re home, so when those habits get installed, it becomes second nature to do the things you need to do in order to maintain proper health and functionality.

So if you are not taking care of yourself by eating, sleeping, and working out properly, I need to ask again, WTF are you doing? Choosing hard things now, or hard things will be chosen for you later, is my last piece of advice.

Committed to your success,

Matt
