Fit for Life: Seek Perfection

Do you get discouraged when things don’t turn out perfectly? I do, and that’s a big flaw in my DNA, that causes me more stress and anxiety than I need.
I set my standards high, set high goals, and get a bit discouraged when I don’t accomplish what I set out to do. I am hard on myself because I want to accomplish the things, I am capable of, and do the things I set out to do, to the best of my ability. When I fail to conquer a certain goal, it frustrates me.

Quick example: I have been striving to reach a certain number of members since the beginning of 2020. My goal has been pushed back every 90 days since then, yet it hasn’t happened yet. This year, we keep getting closer, yet fall back because of attrition etc. We grow then regress.
Until lately, this has been my Achilles heel/thorn in my side, until I stopped and looked back at how much we have grown as an organization. I started counting the wins we have had over the past couple years, and just last month, we had a record month for revenue and sales.
Not only that, but I have also put in place a dynamic team of young individuals that will continue to contribute to the growth of the organization. Together we are finding ways to keep members happier, more engaged, motivated, and that equals better results. In other words, we are building the foundation to support the overall goal and maintain it over time.
You will always overestimate what you can accomplish in 1 year, yet always underestimate what you have accomplished in 5 years.
I am telling you this, I see a lot of people get frustrated with their health and fitness goals and give up when they don’t achieve what they set out to do in a specific amount of time. When this happens, they throw in the towel, give up on themselves, and regress into a hole so deep, it gets even more difficult to climb out of.
I am always comparing the pitfalls of running a business to the issues people have getting fit and healthy because the processes are similar. Fitness comes easy for me; however, the business side has been a struggle over the past 7 years because it was all new to me and I have been learning as I go.
Let me give you some examples of the differences and similarities of fitness vs running a business and some solutions to keep you on the right path.
They are both similar in the way that you need to show up every day.
With business, you need to be on point with your systems and numbers; with fitness you need to be on point with your nutrition and workouts. Neither entity will excel by giving “part-time” effort.
Yes, you can take breaks from both and go on vacation, however you need to be focused on both 100% of the time or you will only achieve the results that reflect your efforts. Lay the foundation by creating the non-negotiable habits that will net you success.
A difference is that in business, you have other people that depend on you, and you need to depend on them as well. If you fail, people lose jobs, and members won’t get results. With fitness, it’s all you. When you succeed, you win if you fail, you lose.
In business, you can’t do it alone. With fitness, you need to do it alone. Even if you have a coach guiding you through the process, they can’t want it more than you, and it’s up to you to do the work.
Nobody is going to follow you around with healthy food and drive you to the gym. Yet with running a business, it’s impossible to overcome all the work and moving parts unless you have a great team.
Being relentless is essential in both arenas.
There will be days that you want to give up, yet you overcome those feelings and keep pushing on. There are days you will be tired, unmotivated, burnt out, and don’t “feel like it” however, nobody cares, and no one can do the work for you. Winners rise to the occasion, and losers make excuses.
You need to dig down deep and rise to the occasion; otherwise, success gets more and more out of reach.
The people that wake up at 5 am all year round and drive to the gym rain or shine get the best results. So do the people that watch what they eat, drink their required water daily and get plenty of sleep.
You don’t need to be perfect every single time, sometimes, just getting it done is better than doing nothing, however, we always want to set our standards high and try to overachieve.
Not every workout is going to be a great one, but any workout is better than the one you didn’t do.
Not every month in business will be record-setting either, but every shortfall has a learning moment behind it.
Never let excuses determine your outcome.
Be relentless and take steps every day that will bring you closer to your overall goal, because if you don’t, goals will never be achieved.
At Providence Fit Body Boot Camp, we have a system in place to help our members create the habits necessary to build muscle and lose fat.
Having the best exercise and nutrition program in the world still won’t work unless you create and execute the small daily habits required to see results. Again, it’s all on the individual to reverse engineer their goals and execute the actions needed to make progress.
In conclusion, if you are not seeing the number on the scale moving in the right direction at the speed you intended, don’t get discouraged. Turn discouragement into determination. The same goes for the numbers in your business. Be determined to do better.
Keep being consistent in the gym, eating healthy, and creating the positive habits that will bring you closer to your goals. Count the small wins, stay relentless, keep showing up, and be patient.
The outcome you desire is just a few steps ahead of you and quitting won’t help you get there any faster.
Committed to your success,
Coach Matt
