Fit for Life: On Death's Door

Ask a healthy man to find 10 things to wish for, he will give you 20 things.

Take away his health, he will come up with only one.

This is how I am feeling after contacting COVID 12 days ago. I was healthy, vaccinated, and paid special attention to building my immune system, yet still contracted this nasty virus. Now I am hearing that cases are spiking everywhere.

People in other states and all across the country are seeing cases rise. There is no escape!!

I even asked my doctor if there was anything he could give me, and he said, “unfortunately not”. He said since I have taken precautions, I will be fine. “Your health, and take care of yourself, so you will be fine”. For others, it’s a different story he told me.

I am telling you all this, because no one is immune from sickness, however, the severity of your sickness, and the recovery time is determined by how well you take care of yourself.

It’s called being proactive and taking responsibility for yourself, your health, and the health of the people around you. Being proactive will lessen the chances we will need to be reactive when problems arise.

Covid isn’t the only thing we need to worry about, although today it is the most talked-about thing that affects our lives in a negative way. However, when we are proactive, we can limit the damages done when something bad arises.

Here are some contrasting examples of being proactive vs. reactive:

When you are proactive, you have good quality food prepared, with you, and ready to eat. When you don’t, you get hungry, get reactive, and eat any piece of crap that you can find in a hurry.

When you are proactive, you take care of yourself, stay hydrated, take your supplements, and feel great most of the time. When you don’t, you get sick, and your reaction is to head to the drugstore for any over-the-counter remedy that you can find to make you feel better.

Proactive people work out all year round. Reactive people are the ones flooding the gyms in January and find themselves scrambling AGAIN in the spring to get in better shape.

Proactive people laugh at the stupidity posted on social media and brush it off. Reactive people send argumentative comments to posts that they don’t like or agree with.

Proactive people drive the speed limit to get to work because they went to bed on time, woke refreshed and have their morning routine dialed in. Reactive people don’t, because they stayed up too late, and hit the snooze button several times, now that are behind, stressed, and in a rush.

Proactive people order in advance and have a plan. Reactive people panic at the last minute and stress themselves over unnecessary things.

Reactive people can’t wait to argue, complain, or fight about something. Proactive people practice emotional discipline and pick and choose their battles. They know that expending negative energy is costly, and rather spend all their energy on something that will positively affect them.

Proactive people study for exams well in advance, while the reactive folks cram the night before, stay up late, and abuse caffeine to stay awake.

People get reactive when their business isn’t doing well, instead of being proactive and making sure things are always running efficiently and focusing on growing every day.

I am very proactive with my health and fitness; however, I too get reactive in cases where I didn’t plan or think about something in advance. In my opinion, your health is the most important thing, or should be in your life.

It’s not selfish to take care of you. Actually, quite the opposite because when you are sick, or something happens to you, it will most likely affect others around you in a negative way.

You can’t plan everything in life, because sometimes shit just happens with no rhyme or reason.

That’s just the way it is.

However, in most cases, life doesn’t happen to you, it happens because of you or something you did or didn’t do.

Most of the time when we are proactive, the odds get stacked in our favor.

So, it’s my advice and my thought process to be proactive as much as possible and avoid having to be reactive and stressed out over avoidable circumstances.

Committed to your success,

Coach Matt
