Fit for Life: Goodbye 2021, Let's Define 2022

This year I noticed something as we rolled out of 2021 and into 2022.

I noticed a lot of people say, “Glad this year is over, can’t wait to start The New Year.” (People say this every year, but I noticed it more this year)

My questions to this statement are, why…. what was so bad about the last year, and what are you going to do to make this year different?

What have you done so far now that the confetti has been gone for a week now?

The honeymoon is over, the reality of the new year is here, so have you taken any action on your new year goals yet?

Ya see, things don’t magically change with the flip of the calendar. Just because the date changes, doesn’t mean everything is going to be ok.

It’s up to us to make these changes. Things won’t happen to you; they will happen BECAUSE of you.

I looked back at all my accomplishments (in my notes) while planning this year and noticed a lot of wins, and that made me come to the realization that 2021 was a pretty good year.

We rebounded from Covid in 2020, rebuilt our systems and processes, and became a better more efficient organization.

I also read 13 books, enhanced my team & made the gym nicer by doing some improvements & renovations that took it to a world-class level.

Yes, the end of the year was turbulent for us, but we made it through.

Covid reared its ugly head and caused a ton of turmoil which put me in a situation that I didn’t want to be in.

We literally limped into 2021, but I don’t want the last 3 weeks to indicate or define how my year went.

The problem is we have short attention spans and are always jumping on something new or looking for the magic solution to become successful and make changes. We only remember the most recent events, mostly the negative, that transpired in our lives, and we forget to count the wins.

Let’s look back and see what we learned, and either make some changes, or improve our current situation instead of just jumping ahead and being delusional that things will magically get better.

So back to the question of why is this year going to be so much better?

More importantly, what are you gonna do to make it better?

Do you have a plan, do you have goals?

Are they structured so they are attainable?

Every year, I sit down and write up my BIG 5 goals, then break them down to 90-day quarterly goals.

At Providence Fit Body Boot Camp, we do the same with our members.

We set some BIG goals, then reverse engineer them into monthly, weekly, and daily habits that will help our members become successful with their overall health and fitness goals.

That’s the only way to accomplish anything…make a plan, take action and execute.

I get tired of hearing, after the first of the year, when the kids go back to school, when things settle down, when things get back to normal, can’t wait for this year to end.

There never is an ideal time or situation.

Like I said earlier, we need to take the cards we’re dealt and make shit happen.

Do you think something miraculous is going to happen in 2022 where all of a sudden you have time to workout and start taking better care of yourself? Do you think once the kids go back to school, you will find these blocks of time for yourself?

What if they need to stay home again?

Are you going to use that as an excuse, or are you going to figure out a way to manage your time and deal with the situation?

When will things ever settle down at work? Is your boss just going to give you money to work less?

Even better, do you think earning a living is going to get any easier?

I don’t, and I am prepared for it. I am not counting on my business booming “after the New Year”.

We keep plugging all year, every year, regardless of the situation.

What’s normal anyway? I hear people saying, “we are in crazy times”.

When are we not?

From Vietnam to the gas shortages of the ’70s to the threat of nuclear war with Russia in the 80s to the riots & the Gulf War in the 90s to the thought of the world collapsing in Y2K, 911, to the war in Iraq and on and on and on.

In my lifetime, times have ALWAYS been crazy and uncertain, so we need to adapt, pivot, and roll with the punches.

So, if you are waiting around until the time is right to make things happen, you are going to wait a long time, and guess what? Things probably aren’t going to happen unless you MAKE THEM happen.

Going into a New Year isn’t going to change anything unless you make some changes to the current situation that made last year so bad that you can’t wait for the new year to begin.

If you don’t, at the end of 2022 you’re gonna be saying the same thing. “I can’t wait till this year ends so I can go attack 2023. Times are crazy and I’ll start when things settle down”.

Committed to your success this year and always,

Coach Matt
