“I truly believe that in order to shift the male/female balance in tech, you have to be girl specific. When you’re looking forward, don’t take your eyes off of gender,” said Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code.

Girls Hack the World

Girls Hack the World was created to provide an inspiring space for hands-on coding, problem solving, collaboration, and computational thinking, a necessary step to rectify the gender imbalance in coding, tech, and STEAM fields.

The kickoff event for Girls Hack the World will take place on Thursday, April 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 pm. The event will introduce cross-school teams with their dedicated mentors and volunteer members of the community.

The hackathon will officially take place on April 22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the hackathon, girls will use the code.org app lab platform to conceptualize and complete projects that go along with the missions of local environmental organizations like Save the Bay, the Blackstone Conservancy and the Southside Community Land Trust.

The Girls Hack the World event will feature three speakers: Theresa Moore, Roopa Parekh and Sophie Houser.

Theresa Moore, speaking on Thursday, is the founder and president of T-Time Productions, an organization that creates digital apps which reflect the country’s changing demographics. Roopa Parekh, also speaking on Thursday, is the New England Market Vice President of Konica Minolta, a sponsor of Girls Hack the World.
