MUSIC: Life's a Gas Takes Over The Parlour

One of my favorite people in Providence is John White. He always goes to shows, supports local causes and his appreciation for the Providence music scene is unrivaled. As his moniker Shybluespaceman he put on a special event titled "Life's a Gas" at The Parlour this past Saturday featuring a handful of the best acts in the Creative Capital. Pixels, Castle, The Silks' Tyler-James Kelly, Vudu Sister, and Atlantic Thrills rounded out a night chock full of raffles, giveaways and scrumptious cupcakes. Saturday night is always everyone's top occasion to go out and experience the nightlife, but at The Parlour Saturday night was a gas.

Pixels

A dynamic duo that are always fun to watch and listen to, Pixels consisting of Andy Davis and Melba Cantwell set the mood just right. Paying homage to the early 90's alternative rock style with "I Wanna Be Sedated", "The Terminator Of Hearts", "She Loves You American" and "Leave To-Day", Pixels were definitely on point with every riff and drumbeat. Pixels are currently working on their debut full length that should be out sometime when the weather starts getting cold. If it's as good as their EP L.H.O.O.Q then it should warm up your ears like chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

Castle

A gypsy-folk band from Newport that I've heard so much about but never had the pleasure of seeing them live, Castle came up next. I was immediately taken by the fact that they use an accordion; other than the legendary Alec K. Redfearn I can't name another act in Rhode Island that uses one. A lot of rhythm with "Pointed Needles", "Foggy Eyes", "Save Yourself", "Numbers" and "Shadows", Castle had a sea shanty aesthetic that I dug a lot. The Foo Fighters' IT guy might not like them, but everyone at The Parlour fell in love with Castle. I'm going to make sure I see them play again the next time I head over to Newport; you should do the same.

Tyler-James Kelly

One of the best songwriters in Providence, The Silks' Tyler-James Kelly went up to bring those blues licks and soulful voice to provide an intimate performance. "Trouble" and "Mud Money" highlighted the beginning of Tyler-James' performance and then Vudu Sister's Amato Zinno and Castle's David Passafiume joined in for a honky tonk chickin' pickin' instrumental session that had people cutting a rug. Finishing it off with a version of Rufus Thomas' "Walking The Dog", Tyler-James had an amazing set that only he can deliver. The Silks' will be celebrating the release of their debut album Last American Band at Fete on November 30th, it'll be night you don't want to miss so you should go.

Vudu Sister

It's only fitting after one fantastic songwriter that there's another one to follow them up. There are few better musicians in Providence than Vudu Sister's Keith McCurdy, and joined by Zinno on upright bass and Michael Samos on dobro this trio proceeded to give the night a sense of poetic darkness. Starting it off with a rendition of Neil Young's "Pocahontas", Vudu Sister captured the entire room's attention. You gotta love Keith's storytelling through his songs, they brought a spooky chill that resonated throughout The Parlour. Vudu Sister will be doing a little tour of the mid-Atlantic states of Virginia and North Carolina next month. Atlantic Thrills

After the raffle winners were named and a thunderous introduction, Atlantic Thrills went on to finish the show off with authority. Getting right into the thick of it with a cover of The Yardbirds' "For Your Love", "Drugs In It" and "Let It Go", this garage rock quartet had everyone going crazy. In the middle of the fracas they unleashed a rendition of The Ramones' "This Ain't Havana" and then right into T. Rex's "Life's a Gas". Concluding the initial performance with "Day At The Beach", Atlantic Thrills went back for a encore of "Acid Rain" that had the crowd pogoing like a bunch of maniacs. Whenever you're looking to have fun look no further than Atlantic Thrills. They have a new 7" single out for "Day At The Beach" that you have to give a listen and they should have an album out before you know it. John White put on quite the musical extravaganza, whenever Shybluespaceman has another soirée going on you better go. Speaking of going, hit up The Parlour for great drink, tasty grub and wonderful tunes on tap.
