MUSIC: Northern Lands Releases He Took A Dive At The Met

You like rock & roll? You know, that ancient music that consists of odd instruments like guitars and an actual drum kit? Well you should and it invaded The Met in Pawtucket this past Saturday. One of the hottest bands in Providence, Northern Lands, unveiled their debut album He Took A Dive to the excited masses and it was a time definitely to be had. Cactus Attack, Viking Jesus and The Mallett Brothers Band filled out the bill and it was worthy of blowing the speakers up like a tank of kerosene next to a fireworks display. Rock & roll was oh so present at The Met and you had to be here on Saturday if you weren't already.

Cactus Attack

A bluegrass rock & roll band that brought it all back home, Cactus Attack was an oasis of awesome tunes to start off the night. "Shot Hay Women", "Railroad", "Free Born Forlorn", "STD's", "Ramblin'", "Whiskey Bottle", "Danny James" and "Dean" rocked the joint. If you're into the whole folk-rock scene around southern New England then Cactus Attack is the new thing you've been looking for.

Viking Jesus

The legendary Rudy Cheeks then went up to introduce the next act and it was one of my current faves. Viking Jesus reminds me of Pink Floyd a whole lot which I absolutely love, but Kris Hansen's songwriting, George Dussault's solos on guitar and Nick Iddon's powerful drumming really make it unique. "Reinventing The Square", "Porphyria", "My Disclaimer", "Big Brother Blues" and "Traffic Song" were part of a performance that had me pumping my fist in the air and singing the lyrics to every song. If you hear about Kris Hansen playing live and/or even Viking Jesus at your favorite music venue, you gotta see Kris and his band. They can be absolutely epic.

The Mallett Brothers

You know, I always have a soft spot for bands who play with three guitarists. How can you go wrong? The Mallett Brothers were just right and they had an epic, rugged Americana sound. "Low Down". "Born Cryin'", "Farmer's Tan". "Wrong Kind", "Goodnight", "Down Home" and "Dynamite" roared through the speakers and left me impressed. The Mallett Brothers band will be playing next at The Waterhole in Saranac Lake, NY tomorrow night on June 6th. Everyone in The Empire State should head over because you'll be in for one hell of a treat.

Northern Lands

Ringing in their debut album with authority, Northern Lands finished the night with an amazing performance. "With Regards to Gregg Allman" kicked off the set and then a special guest in The Rices' Roz Raskin joined them on stage for "Sydney" that brought the house down. "Home Free", "Like The State Or The Quarterback?", "Gallows", "Crumb", "Lucky, Tonight He Took A Dive", "Burnside", "Devil In The Room" featuring lead singer and guitarist Josh Cournoyer playing solo while strumming an acoustic six-string, "The Lester Bangs Of Broadway", "This Old War", "The Last of the Shipbuilders", a raucous version of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" and "Second Note" completed a performance that was simply memorable and had the amplifiers turned up to 11.
