NEW: Providence Ranked 14th Unfriendliest City in America

Providence residents have earned the city the number 14 spot in Travel + Leisure’s recent list, “The 15 Unfriendliest Cities in America.” The ranking spurs from the travel magazine’s annual “America’s Favorite Cities” survey, in which readers ranked various features about major cities in the United States, including the locals. Rhode Island’s unfriendly status comes from its perception as a “bookishly aloof” city; it’s ranked at number 10 for rudeness and number 1 for being geeky.

What Providence lacked in friendliness, it made up for with its “baked goods, sandwiches and pizza.” For this, readers ranked Providence at number 3. Travel + Leisure credits LaSalle Bakery as a go-to for all three. The capital city also ranked well for welcoming LGBT travelers and as a destination for “girlfriend getaways,” citing The Dean Hotel as a great spot for everyone with their fun karaoke and fabulous cocktail lounge.

Providence is not the only New England city to make the list; Boston came in at number 5 for its rudeness and “skillful backtalk.” Topping the list at number 1 is New York City.
