The Smith-Appleby House dates back to 1696 when it was built by Elisha Smith, the grandson of John Smith "The Miller," a member of Roger Williams original part of six men who left the Massachusetts Bay colony to start the colony of Providence in 1636.
The house is currently owned and operated by the Historical Society of Smithfield as a living museum hosting various educational activities, programs, and events throughout the year.
The house has been expanded from it's original construction as a one-room stone-ender cottage to a 12 room historic farmhouse.
