Stages of Freedom will host a grand opening ceremony for its new museum, bookshop and event space set to open in Providence.

The event will take place on Thursday, July 20 at 5 p.m. at 10 Westminster Street.

The Museum

The museum celebrates Rhode Island’s African American heritage.

"We are the only museum downtown, what it is its going to be an African American museum of course. We expect to have lots of rare books on display, slave documents. We are going to have the second oldest slave document on display. Newport Historical Society has the oldest," Rickman said.

The museum will also feature a gift shop.

"One part of the museum is a gift shop. That features collectibles from King Tut's tomb to old jazz records that people can buy," Rickman added.
