One of the best ways to protect your hair from sun damage is a good ol' hat trick! We found hats loaded with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ which not only look chic, they also shield your hair and scalp from penetrating rays and keep you cool. We recommend putting your hair into a braid or low pony and top with the hat: stylish and safe! Choose from a wide selection of San Diego Hats at Frog & Toad, prices range from $12-$42, 795 Hope St, Providence, 831-3434.

Condition

Water (pool or ocean) saps hair of moisture. The key to keeping hair super healthy is to moisturize and condition with leave-in conditioner daily. Before heading to the beach or pool, run a leave-in conditioner like L’Oreal EverPure Moisture Leave-In Conditioner ($9, CVS Pharmacy) or Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner ($12, Sephora in Providence Place Mall) through your hair to keep it soft all day long.

Compensate

Make up for long-term damage by using a hair mask 1-2 times per week. After shampooing, apply the mask to hair and scalp for 3-5 minutes (depending on hair type) and rinse. Your hair will thank you! A couple to try are Frederic Fekkai Hair Mask with Shea Butter ($22.50, Nordstrom in Providence Place Mall) and Garnier Fructis Fortifying Deep Conditioner 3 Minute Masque ($7, drugstores).

Cavort

Nothing says summer nights like wistfully wavy beach hair. To get the style sans the sun and sand try Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray, which has a hint of yummy beach scent ($25, Strands Salon, 489 Angell St, Providence, 421-1975) or Bohemian Beach Spray by David Babaii for Wildaid ($10, Bath and Body Works at Garden City, Cranston).
