The Investigation

According to Cranston Police, officers received reports that a person had been struck by a Cranston city-owned vehicle on Trainor Street at the intersection of Gansett Avenue on Thursday morning at approximately 7:23 a.m.

When officers and fire department personnel arrived on the scene, they encountered an 11-year-old girl who reported being injured as a result of being struck by a Ford F-150 pickup.

The driver of the vehicle, a city employee, remained on scene and was cooperative with police.

An investigation conducted by the Traffic Unit revealed that the 11-year-old was walking with another juvenile southbound on Gansett Avenue approaching Trainor Street in route to Bain Middle School where they are students.

Once they reached the intersection of Trainor Street, they began to cross using the marked crosswalk on Trainor Street, at which time the pickup truck was traveling north on Gansett Avenue suddenly turned left onto Trainor Street and struck the 11-year-old

The second juvenile observed the oncoming vehicle just prior to the collision and was able to avoid being hit.

The 11-year-old victim was transported by rescue personnel to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and is stable condition.

At the time the operator of the pickup entered Trainor Street, access is prohibited from Gansett Avenue (one-way street) from 7:00 am-9:00 am and 2:00 pm-4:00 pm weekdays which is clearly marked.
