Providence Councilwoman Commends Work of Police After Man Arrested for False Carjacking Report

Providence City Councilwoman Jo-Ann Ryan (Ward 5) is commending the work of the Providence Police Department, after the filing of a false carjacking report in her community.

As GoLocal reported, Terrence Lafauret, age 24, told police he had been carjacked at gunpoint by a "man in a mask" in Elmhurst early on the morning of February 6.

After conducting an investigation, police later determined Lafauret had lied about the incident.

He was arrested and charged with filing a false police report; court records show that Lafauret - who has a criminal history - was sentenced to 45 days in prison and a "suspended" sentence of 320 days.

“Last week, our community was deeply unsettled by an alleged armed carjacking in the heart of Ward 5. The Providence Police Department immediately flagged the report as suspicious, and after conducting a thorough investigation, found the incident was falsified,” said Ryan. “I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to Major David A. Lapatin who responded immediately, directing detectives to canvass the neighborhood and engage the community. His actions and the investigative work of our detectives helped quickly resolve this case. Their work has brought a sense of ease and calm back to our neighborhood.

“I would also like to thank my neighbors for working closely with the police on this important safety topic," said Ryan. "I assure you that public safety remains my top priority, and I will continue working to ensure our Police Department has the resources they need to prevent future incidents, hold offenders accountable, and keep our city safe.”

Lapatin had told GoLocal that police take the filing of false police reports seriously.

“This report and investigation involved police resources that could been used elsewhere,” said Lapatin.
