Comedian Joe Rogan said this month that a show he did on Block Island over 30 years ago was the most “stupefyingly drunk” audience he has ever encountered in his career.

Rogan made the pronouncement on his podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience” on August 2.

His comments came one week before multiple incidents occurred on Block Island including a fight and arrest at Ballard’s Beach Club — and seven people arrested for fighting on the Block Island Ferry.

During his podcast on Spotify, Rogan said that even though the show on Block Island was decades ago, he remembers telling himself that he was “never going back. “

“I did a gig once on this place called Block Island — I think it’s off Rhode Island somewhere — but I don’t if the audience that I had was indicative of the rest of the population of this island but…there’s not a lot to do on this island,” said Rogan on the podcast. “I think it’s mostly like fisherman…I don’t know.”

“But I’ve never encountered a more stupefyingly drunk audience in my life. They weren’t just drunk, they were f—king obliterated,” he continued. “And it was the whole crowd. It was me and this guy Scott I was doing this gig with. I remember we went back to the place we were staying afterward and we were like, ‘Never again.’ This is the worst gig ever. We have to tell everybody.”

“Is there a right amount of drunk that the crowd needs to be?” asked podcast host Chris Williamson.

“No, they can be completely sober, and have a good time,” said Rogan. “Alcohol is obviously a social lubricant, it helps a little bit for people to loosen up, have some fun. But I go to shows all the time where I’m sober and laughing. You don’t have to be drunk or intoxicated in any way.”

“But being stupefied — these people were just ‘waaaarrrgh.’ it wasn’t one of them, it wasn’t ten of them, it was all of them. I’ve never encountered an audience like that where everybody was s—faced,” said Rogan. “There’s got to be a table you can turn to that’s a rational group of people, out having a good time, where you can go, ‘What the f—k is going on?’ There were no people like that there. Everyone was just like, ‘Waaaaarrrgh.’ And kept drinking. It was so depressing.  And I remember thinking imagine growing up and being stuck on this island. I don’t know. Maybe it’s better now….maybe they’ve got their s—t together now.”

“But when I was there — I think it was 1989. It was horrific. I couldn’t believe it,” said Rogan. “I remember coming back and saying I’m never going back. There was no humor. It didn’t matter who you said. These people were obliterated.”
