EDITORIAL: We Know What the New Name Should Be

The Dunk needs a new name.

The naming rights for the Providence Civic Center/Dunkin’ Donuts Center are now up for negotiations.

Ideally, the name should be reflective of the building and should maximize revenue to the facility.

After years of national embarrassments, near-player injuries, with games delayed and canceled due to condensation on the floor, we believe we have identified the category of corporate sponsors most strategically aligned with the building's needs.

Sure, names like Bally’s are floating around. The gaming company is considered a front-runner. It could tie in nicely, as you could bet on how long the game is going to be delayed due to the wet basketball court or maybe a wager on the number of ACL injuries.

But it is not a strategic name.

According to the executives over at the RI Convention Center Authority, the cost of fixing the leaking roof is about $8 million dollars.

Thus, the most fiscally responsible deal is to trade for a new roof with a local roofing company and call the building "The Drip."

It is a natural, "Hey, you going to the game at The Drip tonight?"

Problem solved.

In all seriousness, the brain trust overseeing the building should fix the roof and make sure that the games can be played on schedule and safely, because right now, everyone is so looking forward to catching a game next season at "The Drip."

And, at this rate, it might be a puddle.
