Effort to Pass Truck Tolls Gets Push from TV and Digital Ads

The effort to break the logjam and push truck toll legislation through the legislature is getting support on television and in digital media buys.

Just prior to Larry David and Bernie Sanders appearance on Saturday Night Live, the RI Coalition for Better Roads launched a 30 second TV spot on WJAR-10. The ad focused on the need to improve Rhode Island’s infrastructure. The campaign is funded by the RI Building Trades.

“The Coalition for Better Roads believes the revamped Rhode Works is an unprecedented opportunity to rehabilitate our infrastructure and create jobs in RI,” states the group of its goals.

The group has not disclosed the amount of the television buy.

Last week on GoLocalProv.com, the group launched a digital advertising campaign. The ads focus on three aspects of the revised truck toll legislation: the expected 6,000 jobs the Rhode Works program is expected to produce, the poor rating of RI’s roads (47th) and bridges (50th), and that the revised legislation removes Wall Street interests from the program. The digital campaign is funded by the Fund for Democratic Leadership -- a political campaign arm of Speaker Nicholas Mattiello.

Under the previous version of the bill proposed by Governor Gina Raimondo’s Administration, Wall Street investment banks and bond holders would see massive fees and hundreds of millions in interest payments.

The proposed legislation now being considered is a $300 million Garvee bond --  instead of the former $600 million proposal.

The interest on the bond has been reduced by 65% -- from $578 million to $204 million.

In addition, RI Department of Transportation has launched an entire website in support of Rhode Works.
