Gas Prices: Some Good News for Holiday Shoppers and Travelers

After increasing for six weeks in a row, gas prices in Rhode Island remained unchanged this week, according to AAA Southern New England, which called it a “little bit of good news” for holiday shoppers and travelers.

The average price for regular unleaded gas is $3.10, which is 12 cents above the national average. A year ago the average Rhode Island price was $2.63.

Despite the increase, AAA predicts that over 93 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles or more over the next days—3.2 percent more than last year.

“The projected increase in travelers over the Christmas holidays augers well for the travel industry, and underlies Americans’ growing optimism in the nation’s economic recovery,” said Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Southern New England Senior Vice President of Public and Government Affairs.
