Ghiorse Storm Update: Up to 6 Inches of Snow Possible This Weekend

John Ghiorse
Here we go again. More weekend weather woes.

A storm is brewing in the Rockies this evening.

It will move eastward and intensify into a large winter storm across parts of the Midwest and East Coast including Rhode Island and all of New England.

The storm should begin here as snow sometime late Saturday and wind down later Sunday as a mixed bag. Where it stays all snow (Central and Northern New England) it could produce upwards of 2 feet of snow.

Elsewhere, including Central and Northern Rhode Island, several inches should accumulate before any mix and change to sleet and freezing rain and eventually rain by midday. It could go back to ice and snow before ending later Sunday. My big concern is the amount of icing that may occur ... it could be enough in spots to cause tree damage and power outages.

It is far to early to be too detailed on the specifics but this will be a dangerous storm during which not everyone from coastal Rhode Island into Central Massachusetts will be seeing the same sequence of events and eventual results once the storm is over.

As they say, "Stay tuned!"

Read the National Weather Service’s Winter Storm Watch Below

Highest potential for over a foot of snow is north of route 2 in Massachusetts. In addition, ice accretion of one-tenth to three-tenths of an inch are possible mainly to the south of the Massachusetts turnpike with localized amounts up to one half inch possible.

The snow will change to sleet and freezing rain south of route 2

between midnight and 6 am Sunday. The bulk of the freezing rain

and ice accretion is expected south of the Massachusetts

higher amounts occur. Precipitation may change to a period of

all rain along and southeast of the Boston to Providence

temperatures on Sunday may result in a flash freeze. Mixed

precipitation will transition back to a period of snow before

ending sometime Sunday afternoon or early evening.
