In 2018, GoLocal editors made the decision to remove General Michael Flynn from the list of the "50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders."

The list was first compiled in 2016 to celebrate the very best of Rhode Island — the most accomplished in the arts, public service, entertainment, business, the media, sports and all aspects of our society.

Flynn is in the news again for his induction into the privately-run Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. The group has come under the microscope in the past. In 2018, GoLocal looked at its selection process and found that just 15% of the inductees were women.

When GoLocal selected Flynn for inclusion in the 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders, he was a high-flying member of Donald Trump's campaign. He was mentioned during the summer of 2016 as a possible Vice Presidential pick.

"A surprise name on the list is retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a national security advisor to Trump who has emerged as one of the most buzzed-about veep contenders, sources familiar with the deliberations said. Then, Flynn, who had a top-tier career in the United States Army, was selected to serve as then-President Trump's first National Security Advisor.

By December 1, 2017, Flynn was charged by the Trump Justice Department for lying to the FBI. The charges were tied to his meeting with Russian officials. He pled guilty and then that was reversed.

GoLocal in 2017 then began to raise questions about the honorary degree bestowed to Flynn by the University of Rhode Island.

Others Removed From "Greatest" List

In March of 2018, Vinny Pazineza pled "no contest" to domestic assault for assaulting his girlfriend and he received a one-year suspended sentence and one year of probation. It was just one of a number of legal incidents; he was removed from the list.

Also, Ira Magaziner was taken off in 2020 for his ties to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell and his repeated refusal to answer questions about his relationship with the two -- he traveled with them multiple times on Epstein's private plane, the so-called "Lolita Express;' Magaziner's private cell phone number was in Epstein's "Little Black Book." GoLocal unveiled the relationship in 2019.

Shortly after GoLocal exposed Magaziner's travels with Epstein and Maxwell, he was replaced as the Chief Executive of the Clinton Health Access Initiative.

Today, there is one vacancy on the "50 Greatest" list due to the passing of Bill Reynolds, the accomplished writer.
