Guest MINDSETTER™ Carlstrom: Abandon the Pawsox Pipe Dream

Why can’t the owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox just say the words, "We don't want to be in Pawtucket." Would anybody really blame them? Let’s give Mayor Grebien credit for keeping the ship afloat, but someone needs to pull the plug and face reality.

How it Began:

Remember, this whole fiasco and eventual dog and pony show started a couple of years ago when the new owners headed by Providence resident James Skeffington proposed a plan to build a new stadium on The vacant I-195 land. In a bold move, the owners decided it was a wise decision to ask for state (or city) funding to build the stadium.  As we all know, this turned out to be both a PR nightmare and ultimately lead to the withdrawal of that proposal. It seems that the ownership didn't understand the climate of the RI taxpayer after the 38 studios deal. Unfortunately sometime after, Skeffington passed away, and with him went the Providence site's future.

So here we are today, almost two years later and the ownership headed by Former Red Sox President & CEO Larry Luchino are still trying to find a way to build in "their second choice" good old Pawtucket. However, to the outsider, It almost seems like Luchino and team are posthumously conducting a Pawtucket roadshow.  Almost like an apology mission to show that they tried with all their might to get a deal done in the city that has hosted them since the 1940s.

Let's be honest though - the only new location choice in Rhode Island is Providence, and the ownership knows that. They need to quit the posturing and try to negotiate a fair and balanced deal to build a new stadium - with an equitable investment in both private and public funds. One that rewards both parties for the gains – and yes, the potential losses too. A referendum that the taxpayers of Rhode Island can vote for, unlike many of the investments made by the General Assembly and our Commerce Corp.

Now What?

Rhode Island tells the ownership to try your hand somewhere else. It's fair to say that with it’s massive debt obligations and unfunded liabilities, Connecticut isn't going to commit any taxpayer money. Even notoriously expanding towns like Foxboro, MA are too congested as it is.

As someone who has worked for the PawSox in his earlier years as a bat boy, I appreciate the nostalgia and history of the franchise. However, confusing these businessmen for historians is a mistake. Let's remember, they are millionaires for a reason.
