INFOGRAPHIC: Comparing Governors Gina Raimondo and Charlie Baker

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker won a narrow victory to take the Governor’s seat in the Commonwealth. When entering the office he faced significant challenges as he had a reputation as an aloof technocrat who would have a difficult time working with an overwhelmingly Democratic legislature.

Baker won the Governorship with 48.6% of the vote to Democrat Martha Coakley’s 46.5%.

One year into his term, Baker has the highest approval rating of any governor in the country and that was before his administration teamed with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to win one of the biggest economic development coups in America.

In contrast, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo came into office with the opportunity to work with two Democratic chambers and won her budget, but got bogged down with a confusing strategy on the relocation of the Pawtucket Red Sox and a series of blunders on her truck toll infrastructure funding scheme.

Meanwhile Baker has reversed his previous reputation and is now considered affable and team oriented. “General Electric's move to Boston is a political home run for both Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Martin J. Walsh, who put aside recent frictions to present a unified front that impressed the global powerhouse,” wrote Governing Magazine.

Raimondo and her administration have wasted tremendous amount of time and energy in conflict with the media and good government groups over the release of public data. These conflicts have limited her ability to build momentum behind her proposals.
