NEW John Ghiorse: July 4th Hurricane Arthur Update

Hurricane Arthur is now accelerating away from the North Carolina outer banks and heading into the open Atlantic. The center of the storm will pass within 75   miles SE of Nantucket early tonight. Top sustained winds continue to be around 100 mph but it should begin to lose its tropical characteristics and weaken a bit as it moves over colder ocean waters as it heads northeastward.

The greatest affects from Arthur will be over the Cape and Islands where winds may gust over 50 mph later today and this evening and possibly briefly to hurricane strength on Nantucket. This will be no day for boaters especially outside of Narragansett Bay where rough seas will increase as the day progresses.

Rain will be the main problem for the rest of us putting a definite crimp in 4th of July plans. The showers should be rather intermittent and showery much of the early part of the day, with the heaviest rain later this afternoon and early tonight. Flash flooding may occur in some spots.

The upside is that the rest of the holiday weekend should be gorgeous with lots of warm July sunshine and low humidity.
