Man Arrested Following Standoff With Police in Warwick

Warwick Police said that a man has been taken into custody following a standoff in the city on Thursday. 

About Incident 

According to Warwick Police, at approximately 6:26 pm on May 15, officers of the Warwick Police Department responded to 23 Cedar Pond Drive for a report of an adult male threatening residents of the apartment complex with a knife.

Upon arrival, officers said they located a 64-year-old male who had retreated back to his apartment. 

Police said they believed the man was suffering from a mental health episode; as a precaution surrounding neighbors were evacuated for their safety. 

After a brief standoff, officers said they were able to take custody of the subject without incident. The Warwick Fire  Department was summoned to the scene and transported the male by rescue to Kent County Memorial Hospital for a mental health assessment. 

He was subsequently charged by Warwick Police with Disorderly Conduct. Police said he had an affidavit warrant for 5th Degree Arson out of the Cranston Police Department.
