Speaker of the House Nick MattielloSpeaker of the House Nick Mattiello is calling a Democratic Caucus for 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
The discussion is expected to focus on the budget and take up issues like the ever-changing PawSox proposal. Polling shows that the PawSox funding proposal is opposed by Rhode Islanders by a margin of two-to-one.
"Before the House begins to finalize the budget each year, Speaker Mattiello holds a closed Democratic Caucus to discuss the members’ various priorities. That will take place on Tuesday at 3 pm in the House Lounge," said Larry Berman, spokesman for Mattiello.
"At the staff level, the House has been meeting with the Senate and the Governor’s office since the completion of the Revenue Estimating Conference two weeks ago. While the estimates are encouraging and provided some good news, there are still many difficult decisions ahead," said Berman.
With an estimated shortfall of more than $120 million over this and next fiscal year.
"For example, there is more than $30 million in raises for state employees that was not budgeted. Speaker Mattiello has made it clear that cuts proposed for the developmentally disabled community will be reversed and the Medicaid co-payments proposed by the Governor [Gina Raimondo] will not be included in the budget," said Berman.
"There are many issues still pending, including how the final school construction bond will be written, and how much funding can be restored in the various cuts that were proposed when the budget picture was much bleaker," said Berman. One of the major cuts that is likely to be restored by the House is the Raimondo cut to programs to support the developmentally disabled.
On May 10th after the revenue estimating council issued new numbers, Mattiello told Nagle on GoLocal LIVE that Raimondo’s cuts to the developmentally disabled are likely to be restored — an amount totaling $18 million.
"Speaker Mattiello is looking forward to hearing from House members before Chairman Marvin Abney and the Finance Committee begin to finalize the budget," said Berman.
