McKee Says Data Has Not Been Released as of Friday

Last Friday night, Governor Dan McKee held an unprecedented press conference to announce that the personal records of hundreds of thousands of Rhode Islanders had been hacked by a cyberattack that gained access to those records via the state’s technology infrastructure called RIBridges [formerly UHIP].

The admission by McKeen unveiled the largest cybercrime in Rhode Island’s history.

Both McKee and Deloitte, the state’s consultant for RIBridges, have been under significant criticism for the security failures.

A GoLocal column written by businessman Ken Block identified that security issues relating to the RIBridges system had been flagged repeatedly by the state Auditor General.

Now, one week later, McKee’s office says there is no indication that the data has been released.

"At this writing, the cybercriminals involved have not, to the best of our knowledge, publicly exposed any RIBridges clients’ personal data. However, public exposure is not a reliable indicator that the information hasn’t been exposed in other ways,” said Olivia DaRocha, McKee’s press secretary.

“That’s why we are urging everyone who has applied for or received benefits or services from any of the programs handled by the RIBridges data system to safeguard their personal information and credit now. More information can be found on Cyberalert.ri.gov,” she added.
