Nellie Gorbea, Democratic primary winner for RI Secretary of State
The winner of the Democratic primary for Secretary of State is Nellie Gorbea.   If she wins in November, Gorbea will be the first statewide elected Latino in RI history.

Gorbea, who served as Deputy Secretary of State between 2002 and 2006, narrowly defeated Democratic primary opponent, businessman Guillaume De Ramel.

"I am really appreciative to the members of the Democratic party who have supported my campaign," said Gorbea on Tuesday night.  "I ran because I want to work for the people of Rhode Island.  We have seen that people want leaders who look out for them

"We're looking forward to the election in November and bringing our message to all Rhode islanders," added Gorbea.

This was De Ramel's second attempt at securing the Democratic nod for Secretary of State. De Ramel narrowly lost the 2006 Democratic primary for Secretary of State to current Secretary of State Ralph Mollis.  In that race De Ramel earned 47% of the vote and won 27 of Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns.  Mollis is running for lieutenant governor.

deRamel issued a statement: “I’m proud of the positive campaign we ran and earlier tonight I called Nellie Gorbea to congratulate her on winning the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State,” said Guillaume. “I remain committed to my belief that Rhode Islanders need a more open and transparent government to improve our business climate and help put Rhode Islanders back to work. I want to thank all of my supporters for their hard work, belief in my platform and I look forward to supporting Democrats up and down the ballot this November.” He spent more than $900,000 of his own money in the race.

Gorbea was one of two female Democrats running in this year's primary elections, along with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo.

Gorbea will go on to face Republican John M. Carlevale, Sr. in the General Election this November.
