Nearly one year to the day after the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Washington Bridge failure, the state has announced the two finalists to rebuild an entirely new structure.

The westbound lanes on I-195 were abruptly shut down by the state on December 11, 2023, resulting in economic loss for thousands of Rhode Islanders and the closure of multiple businesses impacted.

On Tuesday, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called the announcement of two finalists to build a new westbound Washington Bridge “good news” for the state.

McKee announced the first finalist is a “joint venture” between American Bridge Company and MLJ Contracting Corporation.

The second is the Walsh Group.

According to McKee, American Bridge Company is based in Pennsylvania and the fifth largest bridge company in the U.S. according to industry publications

Walsh Group is a Chicago company, and according to McKee, is ranked as the largest bridge company in the world

“They are impressive companies and we‘re very excited to be working with them both,” said McKee.

Time Frame

According to RIDOT Director Peter Alviti, the initial submissions by the finalists will be provided to Rhode Island by February.

By March 14 the state will determine which concepts from each will move forward, and by May 16, the technical proposals will be due along with the schedules.

By May 30, the finalists have to submit to the Rhode Island Department of Administration their sealed bid for the price.

According to Alviti, by June 6, RIDOT will review proposals and select one on that date for the winning proposal to move forward with.

"We're looking for a bridge to be built for 100 years," he said.

EDITOR'S NOTE: As GoLocal has chronicled, many of RIDOT's claims about the Washington Bridge during the past year have proven to be false.
