New Fish Kill Concerns in Providence's Seekonk River

New photos of dead fish washing up on the Seekonk River come three weeks after the DEM first raised the issue.
New sightings of dead fish washing up on the shore of the Seekonk River in Providence are being monitored by the Department of Environmental Management, more than three weeks after the DEM first raised the issue of a fish kill event.

"We’ve been monitoring this over the last several days," said DEM's Gail Mastriati on Friday, of the most recent occurrences of dead fish.

Residents found the fish washed up along River Road last week and at India Point Park.

On July 29, the DEM issued an alert that they were monitoring fish kill in the area.

"Scientists from the Department of Environmental Management are monitoring a large fish kill of adult menhaden in the Seekonk and Providence Rivers. Based on field observations and water quality measurements, the ongoing incident is being caused by low oxygen levels in the bottom waters."
