NEW: Hughes Named President of CCRI

The Council on Postsecondary Education named Meghan Hughes, Ph.D., as the fifth President of the Community College of Rhode Island.

“We had a choice among three talented and remarkable candidates as finalists. Considering the valuable input from the CCRI community, the Council felt that Dr. Hughes’s transformational leadership and student-centered approach will be tremendous assets for CCRI,” said Bill Foulkes, Chair of the Council on Postsecondary Education.

From 2009-2015, Hughes led Year Up Providence as its Executive Director and served on the non-profit’s national management team. With fifteen locations nationwide, Year Up offers one-year, intensive training programs that provide low-income young adults with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits, and corporate internships. Board of Education Chair Barbara Cottam added, “Dr. Hughes has a successful track record of building partnerships with industry and community leaders and promoting student success through her work with Year Up. Her strategic and creative initiatives, both locally and nationally, combined with her powerful local network, will bring development of innovative programs at CCRI that serve the students and Rhode Island well.”

Her own bio says: A dynamic leader committed to social change through advocacy and education. Proven fundraiser, experienced and effective public speaker and exceptional team builder with particular strengths in leading growth and change. A versatile non-profit executive with superb leadership skills and a track record of successfully stewarding diverse interests to the achievement of a common goal.

According to the Deaprtment, prior Hughes was a faculty member at Tufts University in Boston. She earned a B.A. in history, magna cum laude, from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Art History from New York University. 

Hughes will succeed a distinguished legacy of presidents: William Flanagan (1964–1979), Edward Liston (1980–2000), Thomas Sepe (2000–2005), and Ray di Pasquale (2006–). Her exact start date will be negotiated as part of her employment contract.  

According to the Deaprtment there were 41 applicants for the position.

Jim Purcell, Commissioner of Postsecondary Education, said: “I look forward to working with Dr. Hughes at this important moment in the institution’s history, as they plan their strategic vision for the next five years.”
