Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I wanted to let you know that I plan to resign from my position as Director of the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals, effective June 25th.  The Governor and Secretary Roberts have been very supportive of my decision, which as you can imagine, I have come to with mixed emotions. I have been very honored to serve the State at Governor Raimondo’s request. I think the work we have undertaken at my direction sets the Department and its various divisions on the right road to ensure that the people served in our systems of care receive the services they need and the care to which they are entitled. Over the past year and half, I have confronted many challenges and have taken up many of those issues strongly and directly. I had every hope of seeing changes that we are making through, but the demands of the job, coupled with the constraints facing the Department have led me to conclude that my personal and professional priorities would be better met by returning to the private sector.

I am pleased that the Secretary has asked my Deputy Director, Becky Boss, to serve as Interim Director of the Department starting on June 25th. She and I will work very closely this month to ensure that it is a seamless transition for our providers, the community and the Department. The Governor and Secretary have been great at supporting the vision that we have collectively developed for the mental health, developmental disabilities and hospital divisions of the Department.  I have every confidence in their commitment and ability to see the plans move forward.  They, and I, will be counting on your continued support, particularly for the plans that the Governor has made to fund these activities in her budget proposals.

I am sorry to leave my role after such a short tenure, but I must follow my own wisdom in determining what is right for me at this stage of my life. I am proud of the decades of service that I have given to those in greatest need through the various leadership positions that I have held in the health care delivery system. For the immediate future, I plan to enjoy the summer and then spend time abroad with my son and daughter-in-law, who are awaiting the birth of my first grandchild.  I hope to continue to serve others in my future personal and professional efforts.  To that end, I am sure I will  remain in touch with many of you.  I look forward to our continued collaboration in this wonderful State that we call home.

To reach me after June 24th, feel free to email me at [email protected]

Warmest Regards,

Maria
